GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Floridas Billy Donovan has spoken to a couple of NBA teams about coaching vacancies, but adds that "I fully plan on being back" next season. Donovan declined to specify which teams called -- Detroit, Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota, New York and Utah had openings -- and jokingly cited his brief stint with the NBAs Orlando Magic in 2007 as reason for keeping details private. Donovan says, "Im not going to get into, Hes lying. Hes not being truthful. I got a couple of calls. Thats all it is." With a three-goal lead going into the final period on Saturday, Montreal conceded three straight goals to Detroit, including two in 36 seconds, but ultimately held on for the 5-3 victory. Pavel Datsyuk scored his 16th of the year at 5:11 on the power play, and Luke Glendening reduced the deficit again at 5:47 on a soft backhand shot that Carey Price got a piece of but couldnt keep out. Niklas Kronwall tied it up for Detroit midway through the third, beating Price with a rocket of a slap shot from the point, through traffic, on the man advantage. Instead of keeling over, however, the Canadiens answered Kronwalls game-tying goal with renewed energy. "At that point, you just reset, and go back to what made you successful in the first half of the game," said Montreal captain Brian Gionta. "You have to make sure you dont lose that momentum. Its much easier at home, when you have the crowd. You build some momentum off of them. You make a good play, and things start to snowball the right way again." With seven minutes remaining in a 3-3 game, Gionta helped right the ship. He was credited with his second goal of the evening when his shot, which was initially saved by Detroit netminder Jonas Gustavsson, bounced off defenceman Brian Lashoffs skate and into the net. Alex Galchenyuk added a fifth for the Canadiens two minutes later when a Tomas Plekanec shot deflected off his chest and past Gustavsson, who stopped 19 shots in the loss. "Thats proof that theres a lot of character on this team," said forward Michael Bournival. "Weve done this a few times this year. Even if we concede three straight goals, were able to bounce back. We knew the Red Wings never give up. They had us on our heels to start the third, but we got back on our feet." The red-hot Canadiens (45-27-7) are now 10-2-0 in their last 12 games. With the victory, Montreal remains in second place in the Atlantic, four points clear of division-rivals Tampa Bay, which lost on Saturday. The Habs play three more times - against the Blackhawks, Islanders and Rangers - before the start of their first-round playoff series. Montreal got a goal from each of its four lines against the Red Wings (37-27-14). "We need that depth in scoring," said Gionta. "Thats going to help us down the stretch. We cant just rely on one line. Were a much deeper team now." Fourth-liner Bournival scored the first for the Canadiens, his seventh of the year and first in 37 games, at 14:16 of the first period.dddddddddddd The rookie got the play going, intercepting the puck in the neutral zone before feeding Ryan White at the blue-line. White held off defenceman Kyle Quincey and took a weak backhand shot on Gustavsson, who kicked the puck straight to a wide-open Bournival. "Thats Ryan Whites goal," said Bournival. "He charged the net. He made all the effort. I just had an open net. It felt good. But all the credit goes to Ryan." Max Pacioretty made it 2-0 on a great individual effort at 8:52 of the second, going around Kronwall with speed at the Canadiens blue-line to generate a breakaway. Pacioretty fended off a diving Lashoff before beating Gustavsson blocker-side for his ninth goal in his last eight games. With his 39th goal, Pacioretty moved into a tie with Joe Pavelski of the San Jose Sharks for third in NHL scoring. Gionta got in on the action five minutes later, scoring his first of the night after a set play off the end boards landed perfectly on his stick, unmarked in front of the net. The goal was Montreals second in the period on only their third shot. Montreals victory snapped Detroits four-game winning streak. The Red Wings, with 88 points, are holding on to the first of two wild card spots in the East. "We have to be better than we were tonight," said Wings coach Mike Babcock. "Weve been on a good run here where we play hard. I didnt think there was a problem with our energy or our commitment to working hard tonight. We didnt execute well enough with the puck." The Red Wings outshot the Canadiens 37-26, including 15-4 in the second period. But they were repeatedly frustrated by Price, who made 34 saves on the night. "Lets face it. We had the puck a lot, and we didnt find a way to win, thats all," added Babcock. "When youre tied in the third, you need to find a way to win, and we couldnt do that." Both Montreal and Detroit were coming off wins on Friday. The Red Wings scored three times in the first period to beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2, while the Canadiens scored seven straight to down the Ottawa Senators 7-4. MILWAUKEE -- Aaron Hill is comfortable at Miller Park. A night after going 4 for 4 with a pair of RBI singles, Hill hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning Tuesday to rally the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5. "Hes a really good hitter. I know he kills us," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We make mistakes to him, but hes patient. He fights off tough pitches and he doesnt miss mistakes. At least against us he doesnt." Hill is batting .472 (17 for 36) with four home runs and 11 RBIs in eight career games at Miller Park. Hills home run Tuesday came after Miguel Montero had a tying single. Evan Marshall (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief in his major league debut for the victory. "Evan Marshall was electric in his first big league appearance," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "He had a little cheering section out there. His parents and his wife were here. He came in and threw the ball like we were told he was throwing the ball down in Triple-A. It was much needed for us." Addison Reed pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his ninth save in 10 opportunities. Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Owings also homered for Arizona, which has won five of its last seven games on the road. Brandon Kintzler (1-1) gave up the three runs in the eighth. "I feel terrible for letting the team down in that situation," Kintzler said. Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Milwaukee starter Marco Estrada. The Brewers scored for five runs in the bottom half off Josh Collmenter. "The first inning was not well-played at all," Gibson said. "We gave up four unearned runs. But true to (Collmenters) form, he hung in there. Hes great at keeping his composure." Collmenter gave up just four singles after the first. He departed in the sixth after consecutive two-out singles to Logan Schafer and pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks. Marshall came on to record the final out of the inning. Collmenter gave up five runs -- one earned -- and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out three and walked one. "I just wanted to give the team a chance to win to try and keep us in it long enough," Collmenter said. "When you get a comeback win like this, its huge for the club." The Diamondbacks entered the eighth trailing by a run. But Goldschmidt hustled for a double and scored on Monteros single. Hill then hit a drive over the left-centre field fence. Goldschmidts first-inning homer came immediately after Arizona challenged a call in which leadoff hitter Gerardo Parra, who had singled, was ruled out at first base on a pickoff. The call was overturned by review. Lyle Overbay had an RBI single, Ownings two-out throwing error allowed another run to score, Jean Segura followed with a run-scoring single and Schafer capped the big inning with a two-run double. Both pitchers settled down after that. Estrada retired 11 of the next 12 batters following Goldschmidts home run before issuing a walk to A.J. Pollock leading of the fifth. Pollack later scored on Collmenters ground out, cutting the lead to 5-3. Owings hit his first big league homer leading off the sixth. "Obviously it feels good. It makes it even more special that we got a win out of it," Owings said. Estrada yielded four runs and four hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked two. NOTES: The Diamondbacks placed reliever J.J. Putz on the 15-day DL with right forearm tightness and optioned pitcher Mike Bolsinger to Triple-A Reno. While there are still questions about how their handling of Ray Rices case, its clear the Ravens havent changed -- on the field. With Rices troubling situation lingering over them, they pulled off a comeback win Sunday as Justin Tucker kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give Baltimore a 23-21 win over the Cleveland Browns. Tuckers boot capped another challenging week for the Ravens (2-1), who continue to be dogged by their management of Rices domestic violence arrest and suspension. But for the second straight game, the Ravens blocked out any external noise and knocked off another division rival. Ravens coach John Harbaugh is impressed with his teams ability to focus on the task at hand. "The best way to silence it (distractions) is handle it with class," he said. "Theres always going to be in life, challenges and attacks and consequences and all those kinds of things that well talk about Im sure probably this week and ongoing forever. You just gotta stand up, be accountable and be who you are and try to stand for the right things. "And our guys do that." Joe Flacco set up Tuckers game-winner with a 32-yard pass to Steve Smith with 1:28 left. Smith beat Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden before hauling in Flaccos pass and taking it to Clevelands 13. The Ravens ran the clock down before bringing in Tucker, who split the uprights and sent the Browns (1-2) to another tough loss. It was the kind of play the Ravens expected from Smith, signed as a free agent in the off-season. And, it was typical Flacco, who finished 19 of 31 for 217 yards with one touchdown. "We call him, Joe Cool," Smith said. "Throughout the whole game, good or bad, Joe stays the same." The Browns blew several chances to put the Ravens away in the second half. Cleveland missed a field goal, had one blocked, committed 12 penalties and wide receiver rookie Taylor Gabriel fell after catching a long pass from Brian Hoyer, failing to score what should have been an easy touchdown. "Its going to be a long two weeks," Hoyer said. "I know were going to watch this film and be mad at ourselves. We had some opportunities to put this game away and we didnt do it. Its on us." Following the game, Harbaugh addressed an ESPN report that claims he wanted thee team to immediately release Rice in February after he was arrested for punching his then-fiancee.ddddddddddddThe report says Harbaugh was overruled by owner Steve Bisciotti and general manager Ozzie Newsome. "I can tell you this, we work together in our organization," Harbaugh said. "Every single football decision we make, we work together. You get together, you hash it out. Everybodys got their opinions. Its not black and white. Its never nuanced on anything. That decision was exactly like all the other ones. When we walk out of that room, we are united." Harbaugh said he thought the team handled the case the right way. "I felt like we did the right thing and I stand behind it." Hoyer completed 19 of 25 passes for 290 yards. Along with the blown opportunities, the Browns had a fake play in which backup quarterback Johnny Manziel fooled Baltimores defence negated by a penalty. Manziel started to leave the field and pretended to have a conversation with offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan. The Browns quickly snapped the ball and Hoyer threw a pass to Manziel for a 39-yard gain, but the play was brought back by an illegal shift. "It worked pretty well," Manziel said. "They didnt see it coming. Unfortunately we got a penalty on it." Ravens rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro rushed for 91 yards and one TD. He filled in for Bernard Pierce -- Rices replacement-- who sat out with a thigh injury. Smith had five catches for 101 yards. Not everything went Baltimores way. Tight end Dennis Pitta was taken to a hospital after he appeared to sustain a serious hip injury in the first half. Pitta, who played in just four games last season after dislocating his right hip in training camp, went down without being touched after catching a pass. The Ravens didnt have a postgame update on Pitta, but his teammates were concerned for him. "Hes a good friend, hes a good teammate and hes a hell of a player," Flacco said. "No matter who it is, its tough to see that happen, especially when it looks like it might be serious." NOTES: Harbaugh and Flacco improved to 12-1 vs. the Browns. ... Chacin pitched eight solid innings and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, leading the Colorado Rockies past the San Diego Padres, 14-2 on a rainy Monday night for their fourth consecutive victory. "Thats how we win games: Pitch well, play good defence and get some runs when we have the opportunity," Chacin said. "I really hit that ball. I didnt know where it was. I think I got lucky, but that helps the team when you do that." D.J. LeMahieu had three hits, including a homer, a double and two RBIs in a game that included a 63-minute weather delay. Dexter Fowler went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs, Wilin Rosario added three RBIs and Nolan Arenado had four hits and an RBI as the Rockies put up a season high in runs. "Everything is clicking the last four games, everything," LeMahieu said. "Offence, baserunning, and our defence was great tonight. Our pitching was great tonight. Put all four of those things together, were a pretty tough team to beat." Chacin (11-6) set an effective tone from the outset, working out of first-inning trouble by inducing Yonder Alonso to ground into a double play with runners at first and third and one out. He nipped another potential rally by getting Jedd Gyorko to ground into a double play after Alonso singled to begin the fourth. Chacin also benefited from exceptional defence after giving up a leadoff double to Gyorko in the second. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki ranged to his right to snare Logan Forsythes grounder and got him at first with a strong off-balance throw, while also holding Alonso at second. Corey Dickerson then made a tremendous running catch of Jaff Deckers drive to left, and Fowler tracked down Nick Hundleys fast-moving fly to centre at the warning track. The Rockies, meanwhile, again teed off on Edinson Volquez (8-10), who allowed eight runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings. Hes 0-4 with a 13.07 ERA in five starts against Colorado this season and the Padres also lost his other start. "I dont know, it looked like they knew everything that was coming," Volquez said. "I guess Ive got to watch the videos and find out what it is.dddddddddddd" Colorado got to Volquez early, going in front in the first inning on Rosarios two-run single. LeMahieu led off the second with his second homer of the season, driving Volquezs 1-1 offering into the left-field bleachers. One out later, Fowler walked and Dickerson doubled him home. Dickerson went to third on a wild pitch and scored Colorados fifth run on a grounder by Tulowitzki, who reached on third baseman Chase Headleys errant throw to first. LeMahieu said the Rockies familiarity with Volquez was a big factor in their offensive burst. "I dont think its anything hes doing," LeMahieu said. "Its just that weve seen him so many times, we kind of know what hes going to do. He threw me a breaking ball (on the homer). He hung it a little bit and I was trying to be aggressive, too, but he hung it. Im sure hed want that pitch back." The Rockies added three more runs in the fifth. Todd Helton and Arenado had successive singles. After Charlie Blackmon hit into force play, Volquez walked LeMahieu to load the bases, ending his night. Chacin greeted Sean OSullivan with a deep fly to right that scored Arenado, and Fowler followed with a sharp single to right to drive in two more runs for an 8-0 lead. Decker broke up Chacins shutout bid with two outs in the seventh when he homered for his first major league hit. Deckers drive reached the seats in right centre. After the Rockies came off the rain delay to score six runs in the eighth, helped by the Padres fourth error of the game on a dropped throw by first baseman Alonso, Gyorko connected off Jeff Francis for his 11th homer. TORONTO -- Montreal Alouettes kicker Sean Whyte was fined by the CFL on Wednesday for criticizing an official following a loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Hamilton defeated Montreal 27-24 last weekend thanks to Brandon Banks 107-yard return of an errant Whyte field goal attempt. After the game, Whyte criticized referee Andre Proulx. "I wanted to say something," Whyte said. "Im probably going to get fined for this. "Im sick of this. This guy (Proulx) is going to end my career one day." Montreal led 23-20 with roughly four minutes remaining to play when Whyte lined up a 42-yard field goal. Whytes try was short and Banks return provided the Ticats with their winning margin. Hamiltons Rico Murray came in contact with Whytes knee on the try but, no flag was thrown. "After the kick, he hit me. My leg was still on the way up," Whyte said. "He (Proulx) didnt want to call it. He never calls it. Paul McCallum got hit a couple of weeks ago, they didnt call it. They call everything on a quarterback. Why arent you calling these things on kickers? "The guy hit me on the knee. That could end my career." With the win, Hamilton (9-8) clinched second in the East Division to host Montreal (7-10) in the conference semifinal Nov. 10 in Guelph, Ont. In keeping with its policy, the CFL didnt divulge the amount of the fine. Bradley Chubb Jersey . Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hi Kerry, Im sure youre getting a ton of emails about the goal at the end of the Carolina-Toronto game on Thursday night but I noticed something that most of the stories and comments on the play seem to be missing. Looking at the replays it appeared as if the linesman waives off icing when Bernier went out to play the puck and before a player for either team made it to the face-off dots, therefore hybrid icing didnt matter at all on this play. Can you tell me if Im correct in this observation? Thanks for your insight. Peter AshtonToronto, ON Peter: You raise an excellent point given the fact that Leafs replacement goalie Jonathan Bernier did make an attempt to play the puck as it caromed off the end boards toward his goal crease. Berniers attempt to play the puck was sufficient reason, as per rule 81.3, for linesman Don Henderson to waive off the goal. This wasnt the exclusive reason, however. The hybrid icing rule kicked in even though Radek Dvorak had not quite made it to the finish line in the race to the hash marks. These two factors caused double-jeopardy for the Leafs in nullifying a potential icing on the play, allowing Bernier to deflect the puck into his own net. Kinks in the new hybrid icing rule are still being worked out for both the linesmen and players at this point and as unusual, situations occur like the one in last nights game. For our understanding, there are unique situations when the linesmen are required to make a quick split-second judgment as to which player will gain the hash marks first (within a stride) given player speed, momentum, direction and proximity to the puck. One such situation is when the puck has the potentiaal to rebound off the back boards, thereby becoming available and playable ahead of the goal line/in front of the net.dddddddddddd This enhances urgency for the linesman to render and communicate his call. A swift decision by the linesmen would enable the goalkeeper to either play the puck or remain in his net should icing result. Similarly to a referees "intent" to blow the whistle there is always a slight delay between the brain receiving a visual picture, processing the information to make a judgment and then transmitting that signal to the motor senses for a response. The end result of this process would be for the linesman to either wave the play good or blow his whistle and then raise an arm for icing. On all counts, linesman Don Henderson made the correct judgment given the flood of information that he received in the same instant on this play. Radek Dvorak was in the lead lane when he blew past Cody Franson, as the Leafs defenceman was turning from backward to forward skating posture. Dvorak clearly had the speed, momentum, closest proximity to the puck and lead position on Morgan Rielly as they were just about to cross the hash marks. Linesman Don Henderson factored all of these criteria in his determination to wave off icing combined with the fact that in the same instant Bernier made a play on the puck. In the footage available on TSN SPORTSCENTRE, we see linesman Hendersons arms still extended in the wave with Dvorak well past the hash marks and Rielly trailing. It will certainly take some time for everyone to adjust to this new rule. Radek Dvorak demonstrated the "safe" competition created by this new icing rule in his race for the finish line. Perhaps Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said it best; "The number one thing is never give up on the puck." (SportsNetwork.com) - The Edmonton Oilers are coming off Tuesdays 6-2 home loss against Phoenix, but will look to rebound tonight at home against the Colorado Avalanche. Thursdays encounter is the first of three scheduled meetings between the Oilers and Avs this season. The Oilers have some lineup moves ahead of this game as defenceman Jeff Petry and Anton Belov will watch the game as healthy scratches. The Oilers also have claimed two straight, four of five and seven of their last 10 home games against Colorado, but Edmonton is just 3-9-0 at Rexall Place this season. Edmonton trailed the Coyotes by a slim 3-2 margin after two periods on Tuesday, but Phoenix scored three unanswered goals in the final stanza to breeze to the win. David Perron scored both goals for the Oilers, while Devan Dubnyk turned aside 27-of-33 shots. "We really unraveled there in the third," said Oilers forward Taylor Hall. "It was a close game at one point, 3-2. We let it slip away from us. That seems to be the kind of theme this year." With Ilya Bryzgalov still out with concussion-like symptoms, Dubnyk could get the start again on Thursday. Dubnyk is 7-3-1 with a 1.94 goals against average in 12 career games against Colorado, while current Oilers backup Jason LaBarbera is 2-6-0 with a 3.19 GAA in nine lifetime outings versus the Avs. The Avalanche swept a home-and-home series with Minnesota over the weekend and havent played since notching a 3-2 shootout win over the visiting Wild on Saturday. That victory came after Fridays 3-1 decision at Minnesota and the two-game winning streak allowed Colorado to close out November by winning five of six games. Colorado also is carrying a three-game road winning streak into Thursdays tilt and the club has an impressive 9-2-0 record as the guest this season. On Saturday, Ryan OReilly beat Josh Harding through the legs in the shootout and Semyon Varlamov sealed the Avalanches 3-2 win over the Wild with a glove save at the other end. In the second game of a home-and-home, the Avalanche bounced back after giving up two goals in the last 3:27 of the third period, including Mikko Koivus tying goal with 5.7 seconds left. Koivu was one of three Minnesota skaters to be denied by Varlamov in the Avs first shootout of the season. Varlamovs glove save on Jason Pominville came after OReilly scored the shootouts only goal in the third round. Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon scored in regulation for Colorado, while Varlamov made 35 saves through overtime. It was the third time in the last five outings that the Avs have gone past regulation. They have won all three of those tilts, but Colorado doesnt want to make a habit of playing past regulation. "We have to do a better job of winning these games in regulation but at least we got the two points," said the rookie MacKinnon. "It was a good couple of games." The Avs will continue their road trip Friday in Calgary before capping the trek Sunday night in Vancouver. J.J. Watt Jersey . "Yeah, [I heard them]," he said. "They made me miss the free throw." LOUDON, N.H. -- Brad Keselowski will start the second race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship the way he ended the first one -- out front. Keselowski turned a track-record lap of 140.598 mph Friday to win the pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Keselowski is coming off consecutive victories at Richmond and the Chase for the Sprint Cup opener last week at Chicagoland. He swept the Cup and Nationwide races at New Hampshire in July. The Team Penske driver has five poles this season and leads the series with five victories. He has eight poles in 189 career Sprint Cup starts. "This kind of track is kind of right in my wheelhouse, right in our teams wheelhouse," Keselowski said. "We had this race circled before the Chase started and we felt decent about Chicago, but really felt like this was a race of emphasis for us to get a win and get out of the first bracket." Jamie McMurray, a non-Chase driver, was second. Chase drivers took the next seven spots. Kevin Harvick was third, followed by Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Carl Edwards and Ryan Newman. Chase drivers Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jeff Gordon took 11th to 13th. Kurt Busch is 15th, Matt Kenseth 16th and Kasey Kahne 17th. Aric Almirol starts 22nd and Greg Biffle had the worst qualifying effort of any Chase driver and will start 26th. Tony Stewart will start 28th in the No. 14 Chevrolet, his second-worst qualifying run of the season. Stewart was in the car for the first time since he learned a grand jury will decide his fate in the fatal sprint car crash in upstate New York. Kyle Larson was 10th and was the fastest qualifying rookie. "I dont think anybody has anything for Brad right now," Larson said. "Its pretty amazing how fast he is everywhere we go." Larson finished third at Chicagoland and one of NASCARs top rookies still believed he could finish the season with his first career Sprint Cup win. Many of NASCARs elite drivers, from Jeff Gordon to Tony Stewart, have long been wowed by the natural speed, talent and versatility flashed by the 22-year-old Larson. Gordon even came over to Larson last week moment after the race ended to offer some advice on restarts. Gordon -- and so many others -- believe Larson will win soon. Especially Larson. "Yeah, every race I will sit in the motorhome and watch TV and flip to Twitter. Everybody always says this is your weekend," Larson said. "I believe them, but it kind of sucks when you dont win. But I definitely feel like we are really close. We have been close a couple of times this year." Keselowski is trying to become the first driver to repeat at New Hampshire since Kurt Busch in 2004 and would end a streak of 13 different winners in the last 13 races at NHMS. Keselowski has four (Phoenix, Dover, Kentucky) of the 19 track records set this season. Keselowskis win in the Chase opener guaranteed him a spot in the next round of the Chase. Under NASCARs elimination format, four drivers will be knocked out after every third race. Keselowski is the top seed in the 16-driver field. Keselowski might be the No. 1 seed, but he knows an upset can always rattle the bracket. "Its positive momentum," he said, "but when it resets it resets and nothing that youve done in the past really matters as long as youre eligible for the bracket. Im a long, long ways from using the word favourite or feeling overly confident." Wesley Walker Jersey . The Blues said he would not recover from the injury in time for the Olympic tournament.PITTSBURGH -- The Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins have been stellar at home this season and unbeatable in shootouts for two years. The New York Rangers brushed all that aside and played well enough to head into the Olympic break on a winning note. Brad Richards and Mats Zuccarello scored in a shootout, and the Rangers beat Pittsburgh 4-3 on Friday night to hand the Penguins a rare loss in the tiebreaker. "We deserved this win with the way that we played the whole game," said New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped two of three shots he faced in the shootout. "I dont know if it was desperation, but we understood how important this game was. We have a long break here and you definitely want to end it the right way." Benoit Pouliot scored twice in regulation for the Rangers, who bounced back from a home loss to Edmonton the night before and won for the fifth time in six games. The Penguins had won all four of their previous shootouts this season and 14 of the past 15 overall. Their most recent loss was two years ago to the day against Montreal. "Its not something that happens very often with our group -- our shooters and (Marc-Andre Fleury) in net," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "But Henrik is almost as good, and was tonight." Zuccarello, the second New York shooter in the tiebreaker, tucked a backhand under the pads of Fleury -- who had not allowed a shootout goal all season. Evgeni Malkin beat Lundqvist to extend the game before Richards flipped a shot past Fleury to end it. Lundqvist made 26 saves, running his winning streak to five games. "We played a real solid game," Richards said. "We played hard. Theyre going to get goals sometimes, that stuff happens, but we gave ourselves a chance to win." James Neal tied it for Pittsburgh with 2:56 left in regulation. It was Neals 20th goal of the season and third in three games. Olli Maatta and Malkin also scored for the Penguins, who lead second-place New York by 16 points in the Metropolitan Division. The final game day before the Olympic break for both teams began on a somewhat sombre note when the Penguins announced that Kris Letang will be out at least six weeks because of a stroke. Letang, who has been put on blood thinners, also was found to have a small hole in his heart. "No one expects to hear something like that," said Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who like the rest of his teammates was informed Friday morning about Letangs condition. "Its not something you typically hear about a guy who takes as good care as he does of himself. It was a surprise, but from what we heard, hess well taken care of and has got it under control.dddddddddddd" Without their top defenceman for the fifth straight game, Pittsburgh allowed 41 shots on goal and had a rare weak penalty-killing effort. The Penguins lost for only the second time in their last 18 home games, ending a five-game home winning streak against the Rangers that dated to 2012. "Not a good game for us," Malkin said. "We need to play better; we were lucky to take one point. The last 10 minutes we played, I think, better than the Rangers. But we need to play 60 minutes, and for 60 minutes we werent that great." Pouliot gave New York a third-period lead when he capped his first multigoal game in almost a year with 10:38 left. Pouliot wristed a rebound of Dan Girardis shot up under the crossbar from close range past Fleury for the Rangers second power-play goal of the game -- the first two goals Pittsburghs NHL-best penalty kill allowed at home in a span of 10 games (30 chances). Girardi also scored on the power play, in the opening minute of the second period. It took the Rangers 64 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Zuccarello extended his point streak to six games when he earned an assist after Pouliot shoved a puck in that Fleury had pinned between his skate and the right post. Maatta answered 11 minutes later with the first of two goals on the night for Pittsburghs NHL-leading power play, slamming home a rebound of Crosbys shot into an open net for the rookies sixth of the season. Malkin added a power-play goal in the second period, a one-timed slap shot from outside the right circle off a feed from Neal. The goal, Malkins 18th of the season, extended his point streak to five games. That tied it 2-all at 8:29 of the second after Girardi had scored during the periods opening minute. "We definitely played better than we did (Thursday)," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "I thought we played with more energy and more focus and more purpose to our game. And we had to -- were playing against such a strong opponent that we had to bring our A game to the table. And I thought 5-on-5 we played a real solid game." The Rangers improved to 4-2 in shootouts this season. Pittsburgh had won 22 of 25 shootouts dating to Feb. 26, 2011. Fleury stopped Pouliot on the Rangers first attempt, extending the goalies streak to 12 unsuccessful shootout tries by opponents this season. MILWAUKEE -- Khris Davis bat splintered after making solid contact with the pitch and he started running. He didnt know where the ball landed, but suddenly his fellow Milwaukee Brewers were rushing him at first base. He got doused with a celebratory cup of water and quickly figured out what happened. Davis hit a game-ending, two run single to centre with the bases loaded in the ninth off Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon for a 4-3 win Thursday. "I was just looking around and all of a sudden my teammates were running at me," the second-year left fielder said about the postgame celebration and impromptu shower. "I just took it with a good smile, glad I could help win." A nine-game homestand ended on a high note for the surprising Brewers, who maintained their five-game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central and got their fourth win in five games. It was a big confidence boost especially for Davis, a young slugger who struggled the last few weeks but has showed signs of breaking out of his slump. His average had dipped to .212 before going 4 for 9 in three games against the Pirates. Does this make him "Klutch" Davis? "Im not big on nicknames, but it sounds good," Davis said with a laugh. "Why not?" The comeback spoiled the return of Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez from the disabled list with right knee inflammation. Rodriguez allowed solo homers to Rickie Weeks and Martin Maldonado but struck out four in his first start since April 19. Gaby Sanchezs solo homer off Yovani Gallardo in the sixth snapped a 2-2 tie to give the Pirates the lead until Melancon (1-2) broke down in the ninth. Subbing for injured closer Jason Grilli, Melancon had converted his four previous save opportunities. Ryan Braun led off the ninth by singling. Melancon walked the next two hitters to load the bases with nobody out. "Hes a human being and just didnt have his best stuff today. The walks are uncharacteristic," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Hes been here for a while, and thats something we havent seen." Up came Davis, who smashed his broken-bat hit to drive in Braun and Jonathan Lucroy. Melancon had given up just one walk in 19 previous appearances this season before Thursdays meltdown. "I just put myself in a bad spot," Melancon said. The Pirates nearly came through with a win for Rodriguez, who fared much better Thursday than during two rehab starts in the minors. The veteran left-handed posted a 10.38 ERA with Double-A Altoona. "I dont pay attention to my speed. I pay more attention to how I located the ball," Rodriguez said. "I only made two mistakes today." Weeks homered the other way into the right-field corner off a 2-1 slider in the third to extend the second basemans hitting streak to eight. He finished 3 for 4. Rodriguez entered with a 7.65 ERA, while Melancon had a 1.42 ERA. In the end, the Brewers ended up having more success against the closer. Reliever Rob Wooten (1-1) threw 1-1-3 scoreless innings. Gallardo allowed five hits, three runs and two walks, and struck out six in 6 1-3 innings. Gallardo "did a nice job," manager Ron Roenicke said. "He made one mistake on a high slider, but I thought he threw well. He kept us in there, and we scratched." The short-handed Brewers went a second day without star outfielder Carlos Gomez, who is nursing a sore back while serving a three-game suspension for his role in a benches-clearing brawl between the teams April 20 in Pittsburgh. The Pirates Tony Sanchez had a two-run homer in the fifth, his first of the year. Notes: The Brewers announced that Premier League team Swansea and Mexican club Chivas would meet July 16 for the first professional soccer match at Miller Park. ... Roenicke said Gomez was feeling much better Thursday. Gomez left Tuesdays game with the injury, and his dropped his appeal of the suspension the next day. Gomez is eligible to return Saturday against the Cubs. ... Milwaukee opens the three-game set Friday in Chicago with starter Kyle Lohse (4-1). The Pirates start Edinson Volquez (1-3) to open a series Friday in New York against the Yankees. A day after Samardzija was dealt from the Chicago Cubs to Oakland, a big league-high six Athletics were picked Sunday for the game at Target Field in Minnesota on July 15. That doesnt include Samardzija, selected as a National League All-Star. Major League Baseball said he is ineligible to play because of the league switch. The 29-year-old right-hander, who was 2-7 with a 2.83 ERA and 103 strikeouts for the Cubs, won his American League debut Sunday when he allowed one run in seven innings for a 4-2 victory over Toronto. He will be introduced with the NL players before the All-Star game; still to be decided is whether he wears a Cubs or As uniform -- or a generic NL jersey. "I wont get to pitch, which is a bummer, but thats all right," Samardzija said. "Ill just go through whatever ceremonies they have and just jump over to the AL dugout with an NL jersey on and have some fun with the six other dudes we have over there, which is exciting." Oakland, with the best record in the majors, has its most All-Stars since 1975: left-handers Sean Doolittle and Scott Kazmir; catcher Derek Norris; first baseman Brandon Moss; third baseman Josh Donaldson; and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. "Its really cool," As manager Bob Melvin said. "We were hoping for something like this." Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, playing his 20th and final season, was chosen for his 14th All-Star team and will start for the ninth time. He gets reunited with Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano, his former double-play partner in New York. Mariano Rivera, the retiring Yankees reliever, was the centre of attention at last years All-Star game when the Mets hosted in Citi Field. Jeter could be in the spotlight this year. "All-Star game was in New York last year. Its a little bit different," Jeter said. "I dont go into it with any expectations. Just trying to enjoy myself and have fun with whoever is here." Among the big names bypassed entirely were slugger David Ortiz and closer Koji Uehara from World Series champion Boston, San Francisco catcher Buster Posey, and Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett. "I had a chance to talk with David, and he felt the four days of rest might be more advantageous to him," said Boston skipper John Farrell, the AL manager. "He was a pro about it. He spoke his mind and had a lot of input in the decisions." Also elected by fans to start for the AL were Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera, Donaldson, and outfielders Jose Bautista of Toronto, Adam Jones of Baltimore and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels. Baltimores Matt Wieters, sidelined by season-ending elbow surgery on June 17, was elected to start at catcher and willl be replaced by Kansas Citys Salvador Perez.dddddddddddd Orioles bopper Nelson Cruz, tied for the major league home run lead with 27, was voted in by fans at designated hitter after serving a 50-game suspension last year for violating baseballs drug agreement. The big year could lead to a large contract for Cruz, who left Texas for an $8 million, one-year deal with Baltimore. "Its always a blessing when you make the All-Star game," Cruz said. "Im happy because I know I made the right decision." Elected to the NL starting lineup were Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley, Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, Milwaukee third baseman Aramis Ramirez and St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina along with outfielders Carlos Gomez of Milwaukee, Andrew McCutchen of Pittsburgh and Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka and Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, a pair of rookies off to superlative starts, were among 26 first-time All-Stars and 24 foreign-born players. Tanaka and setup man Dellin Betances are the first Yankees rookie pitchers to be picked as All-Stars since Spec Shea in 1947. Surprise selections included Pittsburgh utilityman Josh Harrison and left-hander Tony Watson, and St. Louis reliever Pat Neshek, who is from Minnesota and began his career with the hometown Twins. "I shook head my head for a while. I couldnt believe it," Neshek said, his voice cracking with emotion. "Its awesome to be rewarded like that and to get the chance to play against the best." Milwaukee closer Francisco Rodriguez made his fifth All-Star team, his first since 2009. Bautista, at 5.68 million, received the most votes for the second time in four years. Tulowitzki topped the NL at 5.35 million. Other players omitted despite strong credentials were Cincinnati pitcher Alfredo Simon, Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager and San Diego closer Huston Street, who had converted 23 consecutive save chances before allowing a tying home run in the ninth Saturday. Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun and Toronto outfielder Melky Cabrera, who like Cruz served lengthy drug-related suspensions, also were left out. The candidates in online voting for the final AL spot are all pitchers: Houstons Dallas Keuchel, Clevelands Corey Kluber, Los Angeles Garrett Richards, Detroits Rick Porcello and Chicagos Chris Sale. Vying for the NL spot are Miami third baseman Casey McGehee, Colorado first baseman Justin Morneau, Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and Atlanta outfielder Justin Upton. ------ AP Sports Writer Jimmy Golen and AP freelance writers Mike Cranston, Brian Hall, Michael Wagaman and Jeff Melnick contributed to this report. SAN ANTONIO -- Even though it was an ugly victory, the banged-up San Antonio Spurs were just happy to end a three-game losing streak given their troubling rash of recent injuries. Tim Duncan had 23 points and 17 rebounds, Tony Parker added 18 points and 10 assists, and San Antonio rallied past the skidding Sacramento Kings 95-93 on Saturday night. The win came in San Antonios final home game before departing for its annual "Rodeo Road Trip" that lasts nearly a month. "Its huge to start the road trip like that," Parker said. "We needed a win. Obviously we were in a little slump with those three losses. We wanted to get back on the right track." Patty Mills scored 15 points and Boris Diaw added 14 for San Antonio, which wont play at home again until Feb. 26 against Detroit. Despite playing Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento almost spoiled the going-away party for the Spurs. Isaiah Thomas had 26 points, Rudy Gay scored 23 and Derrick Williams added 14 for the Kings, who have lost seven straight. "Were playing the San Antonio Spurs; theyre going to make their runs," Gay said. "Theyre going to make tough plays. They do that time and time again. Its not were surprised that they did that. But we still had a chance to win and I still wish I had the shot back." After scoring 22 points primarily against Marco Belinelli, Gay was limited to one in the fourth with the 6-foot-8 Diaw guarding him. Gay missed a potential game-winning, 15-foot jumper over Diaw with 0.5 seconds remaining. "The rim. The rim," Gay said when asked what he saw on the final shot. "I mean, honestly, I wish I had that one back; I dont think I miss that too many other times." After being outplayed by Gay and Thomas for much of the game, the veteran Spurs took over down the stretch to end their longest losing streak of the season. Parker and Duncan scored San Antonios final eight points, but they also gave Sacramento hope by going 1 for 3 on free throws in the final 12 seconds. Duncan missed both his attempts with the Spurs clinging to a 94-93 lead. "Very, very, very (frustrating)," Duncan said. "Not many times I get that situation. Just disappointed I couldnt step up and knock them out." The Spurs were sluggish on offence with newly signed Shannon Brown starting and Tiago Splitter returning from injury, giving them their third different starting lineup in three games. Brown, signed to a 10-day contract, had two points and two rebounds in 14 minutes. "We need minutes," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We have to use those minutes so that guys that know the system can be out there at the end of the game. Otherwise, theyre going to be too tired at the end. He gave us good minutes so that we could get everybody else in." San Antonio shot 6 for 20 in the third quarter while falling behind by as many as 10 points. Gay and Thomas matched that production themselves, going a combined 6 for 13 in the third. Williams first 3-pointer gave Sacramento a 76-66 lead with 2 minutes left in the third. Matt Bonner hit a 3 for the Spurs and a jumper that tied the game at 85 with 6 minutes remaining. Then he drove the lane for a runner off the glass after Thomas went flying past him at the 3-point line. That gave San Antonio an 87-85 lead, its first since early in the third quarter. "(Bonner) was great," Duncan said. "He stepped up and scored a bunch of points in a row for us. Made some plays for us. Its going to be big for guys to step up as we have people out." The Spurs are still without Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, but Splitters return lifted their spirits. Splitter scored only two points but grabbed four rebounds and helped solidify the teams interior defence. "It was great to be back on the court with the guys," Splitter said. "I wasnt that aggressive on offence, but I just tried to help the guys on defence with the coverage and helps. Most importantly, we won, so Im happy." The Kings were missing leading scorer DeMarcus Cousins, who sat out his sixth straight game due to a sprained left ankle. Gay and Thomas made up for his loss offensively, accounting for half of the teams 53 first-half points. NOTES: Splitter got his loudest ovation of the season when he was announced in the starting lineup after missing 12 games with a sprained right shoulder. He came off the bench in the second half. ... Cousins suited up but did not play. He is day to day. ... Ginobili (strained left hamstring), Leonard (broken hand) and Green (broken left index finger) all sat behind the Spurs bench. RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- It just wouldnt be the World Cup without Germany in the semifinals. Harnessing all their big-game experience, the Germans delivered a performance of maturity and efficiency to hold off France 1-0 on Friday and become the first team to reach four straight semifinals in the sports marquee tournament. Defender Mats Hummels scored the winning goal in the 13th minute, outmuscling his marker at a free kick to glance a header in off the underside of the crossbar. Criticized for poor defending in earlier matches, Germany selected a more robust lineup and restricted a flat France team to only a handful of clear-cut opportunities in muggy conditions. "There was not much in it," France coach Didier Deschamps said. But, "we dont have the international experience Germany has." While Frances young players slumped to the ground and some shed tears after the final whistle, the Germans soberly saluted all corners of the Maracana Stadium. One job done, nothing more. And next up for Germany is a meeting with host nation Brazil, which beat Colombia 2-1 later Friday. It will be Germanys 13th appearance in the semifinals in 20 editions of the World Cup. "I guess were playing the kind of football which will give us a chance to win," said Hummels, who produced a couple of decisive blocks to snuff out two good chances for France striker Karim Benzema. "We defended well today . I think we deserve to carry on." France struggled to impose the kind of attacking game that made the team one of the most exciting in Brazil during the group stage, although Benzema -- the teams chief attacking threat -- squandered chances in both halves. Late in the first half, the Real Madrid striker seized on a rebound following Manuel Neuers save from Mathieu Valbuenas shot but his close-range effort was deflected wide by Hummels. Then, in stoppage time, he created space for himself about eight yards out at an angle, but a fierce shot was swatted away by Neuer. "We played like a team again," said Germany captain Philipp Lahm, who returned to right back in one of a string of tactically astute chhanges made by coach Joachim Loew.dddddddddddd "Overall it was a good performance from us." In Loews eight-year tenure, Germany has reached the last four in every major tournament it has played -- but remains without a title since winning the European Championships in 1996. While the German team seemed comfortable at this level, the occasion was perhaps too much for a young, revamped France team playing together at the World Cup for the first time. And it continued Germanys recent dominance over France at World Cups. The most notorious of those previous meetings was in the 1982 semifinals in Spain, when Germany won on penalties following a 3-3 draw in a match marked by a late and high tackle by Germany goalkeeper Harald Schumacher on France defender Patrick Battiston that escaped punishment. That went down as one of the most riveting matches in World Cup history, but the rematch -- 32 years on -- couldnt have been more different. A turgid first half was illuminated by the goal from Hummels, who held off Raphael Varane and met a typically dead-eye delivery from Toni Kroos with a header that gave goalkeeper Hugo Lloris no chance. The warm and humid conditions played a part in the slow tempo of the game but France stepped up the pressure in the second half. Benzemas late chance got French fans excited but Germany should have been 2-0 ahead by then, with Lloris saving a low shot by substitute Andre Schuerrle on a counter-attack. "We just werent efficient enough," said Valbuena, who sat, dejected, on the field after the final whistle. "Our efforts just werent enough, its incredibly disappointing." Lineups: France: Hugo Lloris; Mathieu Debuchy, Raphael Varane, Mamadou Sakho (Laurent Koscielny, 72), Patrice Evra; Paul Pogba, Yohan Cabaye (Loic Remy, 73), Blaise Matuidi; Mathieu Valbuena (Olivier Giroud, 85), Antoine Griezmann, Karim Benzema. Germany: Manuel Neuer; Philipp Lahm, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, Benedikt Hoewedes; Sami Khedira, Bastian Schweinsteiger; Mesut Ozil (Mario Goetze, 83), Toni Kroos (Christophe Kramer, 90), Thomas Mueller; Miroslav Klose (Andre Schuerrle, 69). ARLINGTON, Va. -- Barry Trotz was late for an appointment because he was at the DMV, getting his first Virginia drivers license and plates. His son is enrolled in school, and hes lived in his new house long enough for the air conditioning to break down. Hes not a Tennessee resident for the first time in 17 years, and the life upheaval was such that he didnt take his usual summer vacation in British Columbia. And all that was more or less the easy part. Now he has to deal with Alex Ovechkin. Trotz is the new coach of the Washington Capitals, which means first and foremost he is the coach of the immensely talented three-time league MVP whose individual accolades have yet to translate into substantial playoff success. Things will be plenty different for everyone when training camp opens Friday, but what arguably matters most is how No. 8 takes to yet another attempt to change the way he plays. "Physically, hes a strong guy," Trotz said in an interview with The Associated Press. "But theres areas in his game he needs to grow in, and thats really my job, to help him grow his game." Trotz is Washingtons fifth coach since Ovechkin entered the league in 2005, but hes the first who has been a head coach elsewhere in the NHL. He led the Nashville Predators from inception to this year, with 1,246 regular season and playoff games under his belt. He has an established idea how he wants to run a team -- hes already rejigged the coaches meeting room with more cutting-edge technology and made it more of a "war room." He has so much cache that he was able to give owner Ted Leonsis a frank assessment of the Capitals deficiencies while interviewing for the job. "Its the culture," Trotz said. "I just think a little bit of the inmates were running the asylum, thats No. 1. I think theres good talent, and I felt it needed some order." Thats not a dig at one particular player or front office person, but Ovechkin, as team captain, would be a central figure in any sort of culture change. Trotz praised the Russian forwards passion, desire and individual accomplishments -- but said there needs to be more. "If Ovi is willing to listen," Trotz said, "hes going to have a chance to do some great team things. And he is willing to listen. I dont see any reason in my discussions (with him) that hes not willing to change. Now change is going to be sometimes difficult for people at times, but the willingness to change, I dont see that being a problem." Ovechkin led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Looking at the tape, Trotz sees too much staying in place. "Everybody goes after Ovi for probably his defensive game and some of those commitments, and, yeah, there can be improvement," Trotz said. "And Ive said to him, I just want him skating again. I always think hes just dynamic when hes skating. So I just asked him, be in really good shape, be ready to skate, because youre not dangerous when youre standing still." Trotz said he wants to retain the offensive potential shown by Ovechkin and the Capitals while introducing some of the defensive principles that worked well with the Predators. "I want the Capitals to not lose their identity of being able to score," Trotz said. "But I want them to add another identity that theyre hard to play against and theyre hard to score against. If we can add that to the repertoire, then wed be a pretty good team." Ovechkin was moved from left wing to right wing under previous coach Adam Oates. Trotz said he might use Ovechkin on both sides. "If hes playing the game that I envision him being able to play, then I can see him playing left wing -- and I can throw him on the right wing on another line," Trotz said. "To me, hes more dangerous on the left. ... Defensively, hes probably better on the right." No one would forgive the Capitals players for being fatigued with change, having switched systems several times in recent years under coaches Bruce Boudreau, Dale Hunter and Oates. Trotzs message: Get over it. "To be honest, a lot of times systems are a little bit of a cop-out," he said. "If youre a good player, it doesnt matter what system youre playing, you should be able to play it. I think they use it as an excuse. If youre at this level and you cant figure out your role, then you probably shouldnt be in this league." DALLAS -- Anaheim defenceman Stephane Robidas wound up in a hospital with a broken leg Monday night, just as he did the last time he played in Dallas when he was still with the Stars. Robidas had to be helped off the ice after his right leg bent awkwardly when a sliding Ryan Garbutt of Dallas undercut him and knocked him to the ice early in the second period of the Ducks 3-0 loss in Game 3 of a first-round series. The play happened in front of Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen, who was a teammate Nov. 29 when Robidas slid hard into the boards and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. "I saw him go down and when I saw who it was, I felt bad," Lehtonen said of the latest injury, which the team said was just above the previous fracture. Robidas never played for Dallas again and was sent to Anaheim just before the trade deadline for a fourth-round draft pick. Stars fans cheered for the 37-year-old Robidas, chanting "Robi, Robi!" as he left the ice. He was transported to a hospital. "He worked so hard to come back and be big part of this team," Anaheims Cam Fowler said. "He was going to play a huge role for us." The news was equally shocking in his old locker room. Robidas spent parts of 11 seasons with the Stars. "Since I got here, hes been a big part of who I am and what I became," Dallas defenceman Trevor Daley said. "I was in tears when it happened with us. I have a similar feeling right now. Its just a bad feeling in my stomach." Lyle Alzado Jersey . Martin Reway and David Griger both recorded four points with a goal and three assists each. Mario Lunter, Daniel Gachulinec and Stanislav Horansky also scored for Slovakia (1-0). Dominik Kahun had both goals for Germany (0-2), who lost its opening match to Canada 7-2 on Thursday. Despite all that and Mark Teixeiras two-run homer in his return to the starting lineup, the Yankees sweated it out until the very end before Gardner caught a flyball near the warning track in left field with the bases loaded for a 12-11 victory at Texas and overcome a seven-RBI game by J.P. Arencibia on Tuesday night. "It was a strange game, but it was great to get out of here with a win," manager Joe Girardi said. "It would have been a bad one to lose." The Yankees never trailed after Gardner reached base twice in a seven-run sixth inning. They led 10-4 before Arencibia, already with two doubles and a solo homer, hit a grand slam in the seventh. Texas scored twice off closer David Robertson, the fifth Yankees pitcher, and still had the bases loaded in the ninth after Elvis Andrus had a two-run single. Adrian Beltre hit a towering flyball that finally ended the game after 3 hours, 51 minutes. "It was about as bad as you can suck and still get one of the better hitters in the game out and not lose the ballgame," said Robertson, who got his 27th save in 29 chances. "If you look into that sixth inning, I dont think there were many people that thought we had a chance," manager Ron Washington said. "But we never quit, and we was one swing away with the right guy at the plate." Arencibia struck out to start the ninth, but still was the first Texas player with four extra-base hits since Josh Hamiltons four-homer game at Baltimore on May 8, 2012. The last player in the majors with at least seven RBIs in a loss was Jonathan Lucroy in 2012, when Milwaukee fell to the Cubs, STATS said. "Not enough," Arencibia said when asked to describe his game. Brandon McCarthy (3-0) went six innings for the Yankees, who have won all four of his starts since getting the big right-hander in a trade from Arizona on July 6. Teixeira, in his first start in nine games after a back strain, homered in the eighth to make it 12-8. Hee also walked three times and scored two other runs.dddddddddddd Gardner, who went deep twice Monday off Yu Darvish, led off against rookie Nick Martinez (1-7) with his 13th homer. He added his second double to start the sixth and scored the first run in that rally. "He was hitting the ball hard before but getting outs," Girardi said. "Now hes hitting it out and hitting it down the lines." TRAINERS ROOM Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (shoulder), out since early May, threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session and is set to start an injury rehab assignment Sunday. Infielder Kelly Johnson (strained left groin) is expected to be ready to play when eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 7. Rangers: Nick Tepesch pulled himself out of his last start Saturday night because of left knee soreness, and now Texas will skip his next turn in the rotation Friday as a precaution. Jerome Williams starts Friday at Cleveland. ON DECK Yankees RHP Hiroki Kuroda, 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA in five career starts against Texas, pitches against Colby Lewis in the rubber game of the three-game set. The Rangers will try to end a string of seven consecutive series losses since taking two of three against Minnesota on June 27-29, also the last time they won consecutive games. GREAT GLOVE Gardner had a running, sliding catch on a ball that Shin-Soo Choo sliced into the left field corner leading off the third. I GOT IT -- NOT The final run in the Yankees sixth scored after Gardners flyball into the right-centre field ended up a three-base error. Right fielder Alex Rios was calling for the ball when he reached for it, but closed his glove too soon. The ball ricocheted off the back of his glove and then off the head of centre fielder Leonys Martin, who was also in pursuit. Martin said he never heard Rios calling for it. JETER JUSTICE Derek Jeter was initially called out in the sixth after his chopper that was deflected by Martinez and led to a barehanded grab and throw by shortstop Andrus. Girardi challenged, and replay showed that Jeter was safe for his second hit of the game and 3,422 of his career. PHILADELPHIA -- There are no secrets to Hunter Pences approach to hitting in crucial situations. His simple strategy worked again. Pence drove in all of San Franciscos runs with a double in the ninth and Madison Bumgarner pitched eight scoreless innings to lead the Giants to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. "Just go up to compete, try to see the ball and hit the ball," Pence said. Bumgarner (12-7) gave up five hits while striking out six and walking none in a pitchers duel with A.J. Burnett. "It was good to get quick outs tonight," Bumgarner said. It was the sixth win in seven games for first-place San Francisco, which moved two games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Giants will look to sweep the four-game series on Thursday. One night after blowing just his third save in 26 chances, closer Jonathan Papelbon (2-2) took the loss. The Phillies offence, which ranks near the bottom of the NL in several categories, managed just seven hits. They lost their fourth straight and seventh of eight. "Its really been the problem weve had the last three games, stranding guys out there," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "And it came up big tonight." Pence broke a scoreless tie with a softly hit blooper down the right-field line off Papelbon on a full count with two outs. "Pence is the guy you want up there," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He has the knack of putting the ball in the right place. . Pence is amazing. He has so much energy and hes relentless. Were lucky to have him." Whether the last two games have an effect on Papelbons trade prospects remain to be seen. The Philadelphia closer recently has been outspoken about his interest in moving to a contender. "Whatever happens happens," Papelbon said. "I have no control over it." He dismissed the notion that his value would be diminished by his last two outings. "If you were to put the entire season into two games, it would be pretty dumb," he said. Marlon Byrd drove in Philadelphias run in the ninth off Santiago Casilla, who converted his seventh save in 10 chances. The game was delayed for 59 minutes by a thunderstorm. Following resumption in the top of the fourth, the game was played in a persistent drizzle that got heavy at times until the rain finally stopped for good in the eighth inning. Burnett pitched eight scoreless innings, striking out six, walking four and allowing four hits, in a performance that had to have impressed the scouts seated behind home plate. The right-hander has been a rumoured acquisition for contending clubs as the Phillies are looking to sell at the trade deadline to get younger. Bumgarner and Burnett allowed the relievers to rest following Tuesdays 5-hour, 46-minute marathon in which 16 pitchers were used in the Giants 9-6, 14-inning victory. "What a job he did," Bochy said of Bumgarner. "He saved our skin tonight. He gave us everything we needed and more. And Burnett too. They were both locked in." Some small puddles formed on the left side of the infield, but second base umpire Bill Miller never halted the game again after the first stoppage. Pence was involved in a strange play in the eighth. After leading off with a walk, he took off for second but overslid the bag. He popped up and rather than try to go back to second, he darted toward third as shortstop Jimmy Rollins chased him in a scene reminiscent of tag on the school yard. About halfway to third, Rollins tossed to third baseman Andres Blanco who applied the tag for an unusual 2-6-5 caught stealing. It was the second caught stealing in as many attempts for the Giants, as Ehire Adrianza overslid the bag in the sixth and was tagged out by Chase Utley. NOTES: Burnett moved to 48th all-time in strikeouts, passing Dwight Gooden, with a first-inning fanning of Tyler Colvin. ... Philadelphia activated Ruiz (concussion) from the DL. Ruiz had been out since June 26. To make room for Ruiz, the Phillies sent C Cameron Rupp to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Philadelphia also recalled RHP Phillippe Aumont from Lehigh Valley and designated RHP Jeff Manship for assignment. ... Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Dear Kerry, On Thursday night in the Chicago/Detroit game, linesman Steve Barton was forced to leave the game due to an injury. I´ve got two questions regarding this situation: 1. Are there any common rules how referees and linesmen split their responsibilities after such a situation happened?2. How many referees (linesmen) is "enough" to finish the game? Is it possible to finish the game with only one referee (linesman) left? (e.g. hypothetically three referees are forced to leave the game) Looking forward to your answers. With best wishes from Slovakia,Peter Bartisek Hi Peter: Cmon Ref is pleased to receive your question from the beautiful country of Slovakia and with the International Games of the Winter Olympics soon to begin. Thank you for your concern for linesman Steve Barton when he was forced to leave the game in Chicago with an injury. Barts is an outstanding linesman and truly one of the great guys on staff. It appears he may have sustained a slight concussion from a hit to the head sustained on Monday night in Phoenix. We wish Steve a full and speedy recovery. Rule 32.6 provides general provisions when a linesman is unable to continue; "Should a Linesman appointed be unable to act at the last minute or through sickness or accident be unable to finish the game, the Referees shall have the power to appoint another in his stead, if they deem it necessary, or if required to do so by the Manager or Coach of either of the competing teams. If no replacement Linesman is available, the two Referees will assist the remaining Linesman with his duties while still retaining their ability to assess penalties when deemed appropriate." In the practical application the two Referees assist the remaining linesman with his duties. The Linesman conducts all end zone facce-offs and the lead referee (backing up in advance of the play) picks up the first offside call at the lead blue line and also will make the call on the new hybrid icing rule either by waving the play good or blowing his whistle when he determines icing has been committed.dddddddddddd The "Junior" referee conducts neutral zone face-offs. He would most likely assist the Linesman in breaking up fights as well; although it might be agreed upon that the larger of the two referees would perform this physical duty! In the event that three officials were forced to leave the game or were perhaps unable to arrive at the rink due to weather or unforeseen circumstance the authority to appoint replacements is spelled out in rule 31.11. "If, owing to illness or accident, one of the Referees is unable to continue to officiate, the remaining Referee shall perform the duties of the ill or injured Referee during the balance of the game. In the event that a member of the Leagues Hockey Operations or Officiating departments is in attendance at a game where a spare official is present, he shall have the authority to substitute the injured Referee with a spare. If through misadventure or sickness, he Referees and Linesmen appointed are prevented from appearing, the League will make every attempt to find suitable replacement officials, otherwise, the Managers or Coaches of the two Clubs shall agree on Referee(s) and Linesman(men). If they are unable to agree, they shall appoint a player from each side who shall act as Referee and Linesman; the player of the home Club acting as Referee and the player of the visiting Club as linesman." Members of the off-ice crew are typically high level amateur or minor professional hockey officials and could be appointed to act as substitute referees and linesmen if necessary. We have seen situations where this has happened in the past. Peter in Slovakia and all the rest of your fans wish you a speedy recovery Barts. AURORA, Colo. - Derek Wolfe says hes finally healthy after suffering a seizure in November that doctors now believe was related to the spinal cord injury he suffered in the preseason. In an interview outside his home with Denver television stations KCNC and KMGH this week, the Broncos defensive lineman said hes back up to 280 pounds, having regained 20 of the 30 pounds he lost last season, and will resume training next week. "Im ready to go. Im going to be better than I was," said Wolfe, who had been reticent to talk to reporters during the season as he and his doctors were stumped by his symptoms that included weight loss and irritability. Wolfe was sidelined for 10 days in August after his arms and legs went numb following a frightening hit in a preseason game at Seattle on Aug. 17. He was cleared in time for the opener against Baltimore. Then, on a bus ride to the airport for a flight to Kansas City on Nov. 29, Wolfe suffered a seizure and was taken to University Hospital in Denver, where he underwent a battery of tests over four days. Wolfe practiced just twice after that, on Dec. 25 and 27, after which the Broncos sent him home to rest, realizing he wouldnt be able to return to help shore up their defence in the playoffs. "I had a bruise on my spinal cord," Wolfe told the stations. "... I thought it was fully healed and I came back a little too soon and I just kept hitting it, kept hitting it, kept hitting it. And it screwed my nervous system up a little bit, just kind of crisscrossed the wires a little bit. "And really just mentally, it was hard to deal with because I didnt know what was going on and why I was losing weight and all this, and my adrenals werent functioning right, nothing was really working right and what it came down to was I needed to let it heal, I needed to let myself heal. So, I took about two months and I just did nothing. And I feel better than Ive ever felt before." Wolfe said the seizure he suffered on the bus ride to the airport wasnt the kind where theres foaming at the mouth or convulsions but one in which he just suddenly felt very tired and started sweating profusely, which he dismissed as the effects of having just showered after practice and putting on his three-piece suit. "I was thinking I just need to get to the plane so I can take a nap," Wolfe recounted. He started to slump into the aisle, however, and Von Miller grabbed him and "Terrance Knighton started yelling, Stop the bus! Stop the bus!" Wolfe recounted. Twenty-six hours later, Wolfe woke up in intensive care. So confused about where he was and why he was strapped down, he broke the hospital bed before he could be calmed down, he said. At first, he didnt realize hed been there that long and his first question was whether hed be able to play against the Chiefs that weekend. Doctors told him theyd had to put him in a medically induced coma to run tests and do spinal taps to rule out such things as brain tumors. After his comeback stalled in December and he realized he wasnt going to get back on the field for the playoffs, Wolfe retreated to his home a few miles from team headquarters and he said didnt even watch football for a while. He did go to the Super Bowl, however, in New Jersey, where he and several other defensive starters such as Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr., Kevin Vickerson and Rahim Moore watched helplessly from the sideline as the Broncos were throttled 43-8 by the Seattle Seahawks. "It was tough to sit there and watch it happen because I think if our defence was healthy, its a different ballgame," Wolfe said. "... Nothing against Seattle, theyre a great football team and they played a really good game and they had a great season, but I just really would have liked to see what it would have been like to have our true defence out there." But according to the three-time world champion from Toronto, happiness isnt about where he is, but who hes with, and he believes his move to the Motor City will help propel him to Olympic gold in Sochi. "Honestly the mountains and high altitude air gets old very quickly," Chan said Thursday, on the eve of Skate Canada International. "Nature is beautiful, but no mountains or snow is going to make you happy when youre just not in a good environment." The 22-year-old moved from Colorado Springs last spring, just a couple of weeks before winning his third consecutive world title in London, Ont. The training environment in Colorado had grown chilly, he said. "I dont think I was surrounded by friends where I could feel I had camaraderie, and thats what I found in Michigan," Chan said. Chan has found a home in whats become a hotbed for figure skating, and where he trains alongside fellow Canadians Elladj Balde, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, and American Jeremy Abbott. Detroit also filed for bankruptcy protection in July in the largest municipal filing in U.S. history. "Honestly, sure the first thing people say about Detroit is how theyre bankrupt and its run down. But honestly its growing, its making a reversal," Chan said. "I go out every weekend with friends, we go to really great restaurants, its not like its Armageddon. Its not like its wasteland, its still a really nice place, its culturally abundant and a place Im really happy to be at." Chan makes his season debut at Skate Canada, and is hoping to rediscover the confidence he had three seasons ago when he set three world scoring records in winning his first world title in Moscow. He spent a good chunk of his off-season looking back at his most successful skates, and conjured Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who was asked after a win: "How did you know you were going to win?" "And he was like, Well the minute I stepped on the mound, I knew I was going to win. I noticed thaat when I won my first world championship, the minute I stepped on the ice, I knew I was going to win.dddddddddddd There was no question, there was no doubt, there was no worry. I was just there to do my job, I was kind of like a robot." He hasnt added any new elements to his programs this season, and said his No. 1 focus will be "landing on my feet." "(I have) a new long program but Im not trying any new jumps or anything, because I believe I have all the elements I need. I still havent skated a competition yet where Ive done both a great clean short program and a clean long program. "I have all the elements, so its just putting them all together with the beautiful transitions that I have and then landing the jumps. All of that together I think is an unbeatable program." Olympic ice dance champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will debut their new short and free dance programs for a Canadian audience in whats expected to be their final season competing. Canadians Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, who won bronze at last springs world championships, will be favourites in pairs. Kaitlyn Osmond, a 17-year-old from Marystown, N.L., is the defending Skate Canada womens singles champion, but was sidelined last month with a stress reaction — a precursor to a stress fracture — on the top of her left foot, and wasnt sure until last week whether shed compete here. "Back in the month of September, I was nervous," Osmond said. "I wasnt skating, I was in a walking cast, and the thought of coming back and being ready in less than a month was something that did really cause me a lot of nerves before I got back on the ice." Osmond has altered her programs, removing a couple of the jumps that were causing her pain. Her coach Ravi Walia said Osmond was iffy for Skate Canada until last week. "I saw her do a run-through last week and thought, OK, shell be able to do enough to compete," Walia said. "Shes not at 100 per cent for sure. The muscle memory isnt there, some of the detail. . . but she will get better with each event, and that is the goal." SEATTLE - David Price was nearly untouchable, giving up just a run, and he still walked off the field in the eighth inning in line for the loss. Then came the ninth inning, and everything changed for the Tampa Bay Rays. David DeJesus homered and Matt Joyce hit a go-ahead RBI single as the Rays rallied in the ninth inning against Seattle closer Fernando Rodney to beat the Mariners 2-1 on Tuesday night. "We needed a win, period," Price said. "Whether it was a blowout or a game like that." Tampa Bay had been reeling, coming in having lost five of six. Price (4-3) was also trying to turn things around, having lost his last two decisions. Before the game he watched highlights from his 2012 Cy Young-winning season and he changed up his uniform for the game, going with high socks for the first time since he played for Triple-A Durham in 2009. "Figured I needed to switch it up a little bit, and I guess it worked," Price said. Price kept the Mariners off balance most of the night, allowing one run and six hits in his second complete game this season. Eight of his 12 strikeouts came on called third strikes. "David dominated it. Really, we dont win it without him pitching tonight," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "His focus was outstanding. The way he handled every moment — when there was a little trouble, he didnt lose his tempo or his rhythm. "He just stayed there and made pitches when he needed to." As good as Price was on the mound, Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma had been better, throwing eight scoreless innings. But Rodney didnt hold up his end of the pitchers duel. Rodney (1-2) had a 2-2 count on DeJesus when the designated hitter sent a fly ball down the right-field line, and all right fielder Stefen Romero could do was watch as the ball cleared the wall with a couple of rows to spare. "I looked at the outfielder, he got to the wall, and I was like, Oh gosh, Ive got a shot," DeJesus said. With two outs, James Loney golfed a single up the middle and was replaced by pinch-runner Sean Rodriguez. Desmond Jennings hard grounder to short hopped past Brad Miller, and then Joyces fly to right-centre dropped in front of a diving James Jones to score Rodriguez. "Its been a tough start for us, and hopefully this is something that will get us going," Joyce said. "This is definitely something we needed." The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jones led off with a double down the left-field line and later scored on Robinson Canos groundout to first. Iwakuma, making his third start after opening the season on the disabled list with a finger injury, gave up a double to DeJesus in the first, then retired 13 in a row before the Rays picked up a pair of singles in the fifth. Tampa Bays only other hit off Iwakuma was Joyces single to lead off the eighth, but Iwakuma finished off that inning — and his night — with a called strikeout of Wil Myers with the runner stranded on first. It was the second straight eight-inning shutout outing for Iwakuma, who has now thrown 24 straight scoreless innings at home dating to last season. He didnt get the chance to try for his first career complete game, though, as Rodney came on and ended up with his second blown save. "Kuma was out of gas," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Ive got one of the best closers in the game. This guys going to save a lot of games for us, it just didnt go his way tonight." NOTES: Before the game, Maddon said he was encouraging his players to use old-school cologne for the game in an effort to shake the team out of its slump. "Aroma matters," he said. Maddon added that he hoped the smells would conjure up warm memories of the players fathers. "Im hoping for this really awful odour in the dugout with all these scents tonight. That would be outstanding." ... Maddon also used the more traditional method of mixing up the lineup. Myers (leadoff), DeJesus (No. 2) and 2B Ben Zobrist (No. 4) were in those spots for the first time this season. ... Rodney has allowed a baserunner in 10 of his 13 save opportunities. Heres what else the Brooklyn Nets are at the moment: a last-place disappointment. "Tough times right now," forward Kevin Garnett said. They got tougher Sunday, when reserve Rodney Stuckey scored a season-high 27 points in the Detroit Pistons 109-97 victory that sent the Nets to a fifth straight loss and sole possession of the Atlantic Division basement. The Nets, with their enormous payroll and enormous expectations, fell to 3-10, a half-game behind the New York Knicks, and were hearing boos at Barclays Center in the second half. "The balls just bouncing the opponents way right now and weve just got to stay together," coach Jason Kidd said. Greg Monroe had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who bounced back from consecutive losses to Atlanta. Brandon Jennings added 14 points and 10 assists, making all 10 free throws to make up for a 2-for-10 shooting performance. "Road wins are hard to get and any time you get a road win its huge," Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said. Joe Johnson made eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 34 points, but the short-handed Nets couldnt overcome another cold night from Paul Pierce and Garnett, who were a combined 7 for 22. Pierce finished with 19 points, but was 5 of 13 after making his last two when the game was long since decided. Garnett shot 2 of 9 for four points. The Nets again played without starters Brook Lopez and Deron Williams, who have sprained left ankles, and top reserves Andrei Kirilenko (back spasms) and Jason Terry (bruised left knee). "Its tough when look at the record, 3-10, 3-11, whatever our record is, and know weve dug ourselves quite a big hole, no matter if weve got the injuries or not," Pierce said. "We still feel like were talented enough to win these type of games." They played a strong first half but were undone again by a miserable third quarter, as they have in all 10 losses. The Nets had been outscored by 77 points (8.6 per game) in the third quarters of their first nine losses and they were evenn worse in this one, getting clobbered 34-15.dddddddddddd "We have to be worst team in the league when it comes to third quarters and thats not acceptable," Garnett said. Leading by seven at halftime, Brooklyn needed less than 4 minutes to fall behind by four after Detroit came out of the locker room with a 15-4 spurt. Then, leading by one midway through the period, the Pistons outscored the Nets 17-6 to close the quarter and take a 78-66 advantage to the fourth. Stuckey kept the Nets at bay from there, scoring 17 in the fourth. He came in leading all Eastern Conference reserves with 14.8 points per game and helped the Pistons overcome 4-for-20 shooting from starting guards Jennings and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. "Im just trying to come in and just be that energy guy that we need off the bench," Stuckey said. "Just bring energy and whatever my teammates need me to do. They rely on me to score some baskets. Thats what Ive got to do." Meanwhile, the team with the payroll of around $180 million after luxury taxes went with the likes of Mason Plumlee and Mirza Teletovic for much of the fourth quarter before Kidd finally went back to Pierce and Garnett with about 4 minutes left. Brooklyn cut a 16-point deficit to 96-91 after consecutive 3-pointers by Johnson, but Stuckey banked in a jumper, and Monroe followed Johnsons free throw with a dunk to push the lead to 100-92 with 2:18 to play. Nets players made the first four baskets, though the last of those counted for the Pistons when Andray Blatche tipped it into his own hoop. Detroit led 23-19 after one quarter. But Johnson hit all five shots and scored 13 points in the second, when Brooklyn made 13 of 17 (76.5 per cent). A 3-pointer from Pierce and two from Johnson led the Nets on a 16-5 surge that turned a one-point deficit into a 51-41 lead. NOTES: Detroits Andre Drummond finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, ending his streak of seven straight double-doubles. He was 1 of 4 after the Nets resorted to intentionally fouling him in the fourth quarter. ... Garnett tied Hall of Famer Gary Payton for ninth on the NBAs career list with his 1,335th game. FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Roddy White isnt concerned that he might not be 100 per cent healthy for the remainder of the season. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver just wants to get back on the field and help the Atlanta Falcons end their terrible slump. "Weve got to try to string some wins back to back if were going to get ourselves back in this race," White said Friday. "So its going to be important for me to be out there." Nine months after their season ended 10 yards shy of the Super Bowl, the Falcons have been one of the leagues biggest disappointments. They have lost four of five and are tied for the NFCs fourth-worst record. A season-ending foot injury to Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones four weeks ago cost Atlanta one of the NFLs elite deep threats, and the passing attack has been further compromised by Whites right ankle and left hamstring injuries. White is eager to play Sunday when the Falcons (2-5) visit Carolina (4-3). The ninth-year veteran returned to practice Friday for the first time in over three weeks and is listed as questionable. "It went well," he said. "I ran some routes and did some things that are in the game plan. I felt real good out there." White played the first five games with a high ankle sprain, but had just 14 catches for 129 yards and no touchdowns -- far below the weekly statistics he accustomed to posting as the Falcons career-leading receiver. In helping Atlanta win the NFC South last year, White became just the fifth NFL player to have three consecutive seasons with at least 90 catches and 1,200 yards receiving. Coach Mike Smith says Whites status will be a game-time decision. White must successfully complete a hamstring test with trainers before team doctors will clear him to play. White, who missed the first game of his career two weeks ago in a home victory over Tampa Bay, has stood on the sideline the last two weeks and is eager to return to action. "That might be an understatement," Smith said. "Hes one of the most passionate, competitive guys that Ive been around. The sooner we get him back out, the better it is for everybody." Three other starters -- left tackle Sam Baker (knee), safety William Moore (hip) and defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee) -- are also listed as questionable. All three practiced Friday but, like White, were limited in their participation. Linebacker Stephen Nicholas (thigh) has been ruled out for the second straight week. The Falcons passing attack ranks No. 4 in the NFL, but those numbers are somewhat misleading after Jones season ended when he was leading the league in yards receiving and ranked second in catches. Injuries to Jones and White have allowed opponents to double- and triple-team Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez, the NFLs No. 2 career-leading receiver. Unfortunately for Atlanta, quarterback Matt Ryan, when hes not being sacked or hit, has been forced to direct an offence thats essentially one-dimensional. With Steven Jackson hampered by a hamstring injury and the lines poor blocking, the Falcons rank last in the league in the rushing, but because theyre often trailing, Ryan has had to throw the ball throughout the second half. If White can return effectively, the team is confident that Harry Douglas will continue to improve as the No. 2 receiver and that Gonzalez might get more separation in coverage, particularly if hes matched up one-on-one. "At the beginning of the season, you know youve got a really good team with everybody (healthy), but seeing how banged up we are right now, youve just got to find ways to win games," White said. "Its tough sledding, but its the NFL, though." Notes: Smith said that Jones, who is still recovering from surgery, has been at the Falcons complex the last three days, but added that the 24-year-old has his leg immobilized and must not put weight on it. ... Starting linebacker Akeem Dent (ankle), reserve defensive tackle Peria Jerry (toe) and starting right guard Garrett Reynolds (knee) participated fully in practice and are listed as probable. ... The Panthers have three starters listed as questionable -- running back DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps), defensive end Charles Johnson (groin) and linebacker Chase Blackburn (foot). RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Top-ranked Rafael Nadal survived a scare at the Rio Open on Saturday, fighting off two match points before defeating fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10) to advance to the final. Nadal will next face Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, who upset second-seeded David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 on Rios outdoor clay. Nadal has been almost unbeatable on clay in his career, compiling a 297-21 record, the best in the Open era. His last loss on the surface was 10 months ago against Novak Djokovic in the Monte Carlo Masters. But this was not his night as he needed nearly three hours to defeat Andujar. Nadal is returning from a back injury he sustained in the final of the Australian Open four weeks ago -- a match he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka. "I felt empty the whole match," he said. "It was very humid, and this was the toughest day of all. I just didnt feel that great physically, and Im not talking about the back. I just didnt feel that great. "It was close because he played well, and I didnt play my best," Nadal added. Nadal acknowledged his victory was lucky. "The tiebreak was a lottery," he said. "But I played better in the tiebreak than the rest of the match." Andujar had two match points in the third-set tiebreaker but ccouldnt convert either.dddddddddddd "I played one of the best matches of my life," he said. "Maybe the best. But I had a great one across (the net) from me." Dolgopolov, who had beaten Ferrer only once in seven previous matches, won handily and didnt flinch. "I always have these type matches with him, and usually at the end he would beat me," the Ukrainian said. "I knew Id have to make those shots. If you dont win the points against him, he takes it away. Im really happy I didnt get tight and give away a lot of shots." Dolgopolov has won two previous ATP titles. Ferrer won the Copa Claro last weekend in Buenos Aires, his third consecutive title in that clay-court event. He has 21 ATP titles. In the womens tournament, top-seeded Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic and fifth-seeded Kurumi Nara of Japan will face off in the final. Zakopalova defeated local hope Teliana Pereira 6-2, 6-1, and Nara won over Nastassja Burnett of Italy 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Zakopalova will be aiming for her third WTA singles title. She won two in 2004, and has since been a losing finalist 11 times. This will be Naras first WTA singles final. "Im very surprised because its on a clay court," said Nara, a university student who prefers hard courts. NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist was at his busiest when the only thing really in doubt was whether he would skate off with a shutout. The rest of the New York Rangers took care of beating the lowly Buffalo Sabres up and down the ice. Lundqvist made 29 saves in his 47th NHL shutout, and Derick Brassard and Chris Kreider provided the offence in the Rangers 2-0 win over the Sabres on Thursday night. "This is definitely a game we wanted to win and needed to win," said Lundqvist, who served as the backup when the Rangers beat the New York Islanders on Tuesday. "The way we started the game, we set the tone right away. "We did so many good things. I thought we were all over them pretty much the whole game." Ryan Miller shined in defeat as he turned aside 44 shots just to keep his struggling club in it. Lundqvist, who missed two games last week while nursing an injury, lost 2-0 to Montreal in the home opener on Monday -- one night before watching backup Cam Talbot beat the Islanders. Lundqvist was tested the most in the final few minutes as Buffalo pressed to at least avoid the shutout. Lundqvist stopped a shot with the top of his helmet, deflecting the puck into the crowd, and then robbed Marcus Foligno with 1:20 remaining after Miller was pulled for an extra skater. The Sabres had only one power play. "The last five or six minutes they came a little harder," Lundqvist said, "but we deserved this one for sure." Brassard scored a power-play goal in the first period, and Kreider netted his second in two games in the middle period to power Lundqvists third win and second shutout this season. The Rangers (5-7), who played 10 of their first 11 on the road, began a four-game homestand in workmanlike fashion. They recorded a season-high 46 shots. Buffalo lost its third straight and is a league-worst 2-12-1. The Sabres have been shut out three times. "If we want this to stop, it will stop," Miller said. "Everyone has to increase their intensity. When everyone wants this to stop, it will. You have to work your way out of it. "We have to play hard and work hard for each other. We have to have the right approach. Were searching. Enough is enough." The Rangers followed up a dominant first period with an identical 19-shot outburst in the second. The only thing that kept the game close was Miller. "Ryan made some extraordinary saves," said newly acquired forward Matt Moulson, who played his second game with the Sabres. "He really kept us in the game. It could have been more than 2-0." Miller could hardly be faulted for Kreiders goal with 8:39 left in the second. He stopped a drive by Mats Zuccarello and blocked it to his right. Kreider got to the rebound along the goal line and banked a shot off the back of Miller from a tough angle for his second in two games. "Thats a play Ive tried a lot," Kreider said. "I dont know that its ever worked for me. I threw it back out front, because you dont have any other option. You see the goalie is a little bit out, and best case it goes in. "It was a whole lot of luck." Lundqvist made fine stops in the closing minute of the second to deny Drew Stafford and Jamie McBain from the doorstep. Buffalo doubled its shot output to 12 in the period, but the Sabres were outshot 38-18 through two. The Sabres put pressure on the Rangers after the games opening faceoff, and New York had breakdowns in front of Lundqvist. But Buffalo was kept at bay, and then the Rangers dominated. New York was buoyed by a pair of power plays -- the first resulting in the go-ahead goal. "We had a good start to the game, but the second half of the first period, it wasnt there," Sabres coach Ron Rolston said. "We went to the box, and they built up a lot of momentum. "Our first couple of shifts were good ... but it swung quickly after that." With Tyler Myers off for tripping, Brassard wound up for a drive from above the right circle that found its way through traffic and a screen by J.T. Miller in front of Miller to make it 1-0 at 8:28. It was Brassards second of the season, and the Rangers third power-play goal in two games. Another advantage later in the first produced only one shot. Buffalo had its lone power play in the final two minutes of the period and recorded one shot. The national team will host Germany on June 18 before facing Japan on Oct. 28. Both games will be played at Vancouvers B.C. Place Stadium. The puck hit the back of Devils goalie Cory Schneiders left leg and rolled into the net to give Detroit a 4-1 lead. The Red Wings — coming off an 0-2-1 road trip against Buffalo, Ottawa and the New York Rangers — improved to 5-1-1 at home.On the road, bounces werent going our way, we couldnt put it in the back of the net, Detroits Brendan Smith said. Tonight, to see a goal like (Kronwalls), finally we got some bounces our way. Those help for sure. Weve been looking for some of those and finally got them.Jakub Kindl, Smith and Johan Franzen also scored for the Red Wings, who outshot the Devils 31-17. The Red Wings controllled the ensuing faceoff and took the lead just 33 seconds later on Smiths own long wrist shot, his first goal of the season.ddddddddddddIn the second period, it took the Red Wings a matter of seconds to capitalize on their second power play of the evening. His wrist shot from five feet was the Devils first shot of the game and their only solid scoring opportunity of the period.Obviously it was a good game for us, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.
