Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN.ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at the Roberto Luongo saga. One thought he was on the way out. The other thought he was staying. Two summers ago, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo was ready and willing to accept a trade out of town. What transpired afterwards was a lengthy whirlwind of speculation on when and where he would go. And its not like the Canucks didnt try. The team spent a full year attempting to deal the Luongo - and the nine years remaining on his $64 million contract. But nothing came of it, and the franchise goaltenders showed his frustration after the Apr. 3 trade deadline passed without a new address. "My contract sucks," said Luongo. "Thats what the problem is...unfortunately it is a big (factor) in trading for me. Id scrap it right now if I could." The offseason brought speculation once more that the Canucks would have another shot at getting Luongo out. But after months of failed attempts, the Canucks surprised pretty much everyone in the hockey world and traded Schneider instead. Even Luongo was shocked by the decision, after accepting the idea that he was the one that was on the move. "I had moved on from Vancouver and I was ready to start a fresh new chapter of my career somewhere else," the three-time NHL All-Star told TSNs James Duthie. "It felt like a divorce, I accepted it and I had moved on personally. "The only problem was she wanted me back." And Luongo was even more surprised that the team would make such a decision without talking to him. "Out of all the situations that I envisioned, that wasnt one of them," he said. "Thats a pretty big move, I thought, to make without having input from the guy youre going to put your trust in." Schneider also described the trade as shocking, adding that after several seasons of expecting to be moved out of Vancouver, he had finally begun to believe he would stay. Schneider, who spent years developing as the Canucks No. 1 prospect, felt he earned the starting job. "It was pretty stunning," Schneider told Duthie. "In this business you know you are always in the mix, you are always fair game. I really felt that having spent my entire career there, having been in the organization a long time, I was hoping to spend the rest of my career in Vancouver. But circumstances changed. Its one of those things where unfortunately it came down to this." And after weeks of more speculation about whether or not he would return to Vancouver, Luongo confirmed he would report to the Canucks training camp in September as the teams starting goalie. "I have a contract. I plan to honour it," Luongo told Duthie. Theres a lot at stake for me this year." Bruce Smith Jersey .com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies have finalized their agreed-upon trade that sends former National League MVP Jimmy Rollins to the West Coast for a pair of minor league pitching prospects. Buffalo Bills Jerseys . After a first half in which he thought "the lid was on the basket," the Toronto Raptors coach watched his squad mount a second half surge to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 98-91. http://www.shoptheofficialbills.com/Elit...n-Bills-Jersey/. The 33-year-old defender has spent his entire career at Chelsea, scoring 57 goals in 621 appearances. He regained his regular starting place under Jose Mourinho in the season that ended at the weekend without Chelsea winning a trophy. Thurman Thomas Jersey . With their coach gone, they finally played offence the way he would have wanted. Amare Stoudemire made all seven shots in the first half, Anthony passed and shot well, and the Knicks shook off the surprising departure of their coach to rout the Portland Trail Blazers 121-79 on Wednesday night, snapping a six-game losing streak. Doug Flutie Jersey . The Irish golfer, whose father Patrick died from cancer, says he underwent surgery for sun spots. The 42-year-old Harrington told Irish radio station Today FM: "Ive had a number of skin cancers removed off my face.TORONTO - Jonathan Bernier lost sight of a harmless shot Oliver Ekman-Larsson let fly from the neutral zone and missed another that Martin Hanzal banked off his back from the goal-line. With that, the Toronto Maple Leafs chances of ending their losing streak faded away.Bernier allowed two soft goals, including a potentially unforgettable floater from beyond the red-line, as the Leafs lost their eighth straight game, 3-1 to the Arizona Coyotes Thursday night at Air Canada Centre. Both goals I think were bad goals, one from the goal-line, one from their blue-line, interim coach Peter Horachek said. You dont try to understand it totally. I think he rebounded right back and played decently after that, but I dont really know how to explain it.Bernier was strong for the games first 40 minutes and finished with 42 saves on 45 shots. But Ekman-Larssons fluky short-handed goal five seconds into the third period derailed him.Leafs fans who watched their team fall to 0-7-1 in the past eight games wasted little time jeering Bernier for his mistake. He was on the receiving end of Bronx cheers for stopping an innocent clear not long after Ekman-Larssons 100-plus-foot lob beat him.Its tough to stay in, especially when I thought I was playing pretty good and the fans get on you, Bernier said. It gets frustrating, but Ive got to be stronger mentally and stay in it.The Leafs wouldnt have led going into the third period had it not been for Bernier, who made a crucial right-pad save on Hanzal in the second to make Phil Kessels first even-strength goal since Dec. 16 stand up.He played real good tonight, so its not his fault at all, said Kessel, whose goal was his 20th of the season. He made some great saves in there. But when Bernier lost the puck in the stands on Ekman-Larssons 100-plus-foot goal, it deflated a team that was looking for any kind of positivity.Youve got to say, Thats his job and hes got to have that, and Im sure he wishes he could have it back and usuallly does, Horachek said.dddddddddddd Youve got to row with that and move on.Ekman-Larssons goal was the fastest short-handed goal to start a period in NHL history. It also tied the fastest of any kind to start a period in Coyotes franchise history, matching Doug Smail of the first Winnipeg Jets in 1981.We planned that all the way, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said with a smile. When you get a break like that, its good to take advantage of it.The all-star defenceman said he had never scored a goal like that but added theres a first time for everything. As much as Bernier giving up that goal was shades of Vesa Toskala, the real back-breaker came 3:42 later when Hanzal beat him by shooting off the 5 on the back of his sweater to give Arizona (17-25-6) the lead. The Leafs (22-24-4) couldnt bounce back to score again, and then Sam Gagner scored on a deflection at 16:30 to seal the end of the Coyotes skid at seven games. Its about time we got a bounce, said goaltender Mike Smith, who stopped 24 of 25 shots for the victory. I thought we did a lot of good things and got rewarded for it.The Leafs fell to 0-7-1 in their past eight games and 1-8-1 since Horachek took over for Randy Carlyle. Theyve scored just 15 goals in those 10 games. Were finding ways not to win, Horachek said. Weve got to find ways to win now.Their next challenge is trying to bounce back Saturday at the Philadelphia Flyers. You deal with these negative things like having those couple fluky goals go in, and youve got to move on to the next day, Horachek said. Its got to be a whole new day because you cant put your best foot forward if youre pouting or feeling sorry for yourself or making excuses. Youve just got to go back to work.Notes — Joffrey Lupul played just over 10 minutes in his first game back from missing 11 with a lower-body injury. ...
