PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Vancouver Whitecaps can finally say theyve beaten their archrivals in Major League Soccer. Pedro Morales scored twice on penalty kicks as Vancouver defeated Portland 4-3 on Sunday for the Whitecaps first win against the Timbers since both teams entered the league in 2011. Erik Hurtado and Jordan Harvey also scored for the Whitecaps (5-2-5), who led 4-1 but had to fend off a late rally by the Timbers to stay unbeaten in five straight games. Portland put a scare into the Whitecaps with goals in the 77th and 86th minutes but Vancouvers offence was too much for the Timbers to handle, according to Hurtado. "No matter what were going to attack," he said. "Whether were at home, whether were away, whether were down, whether were up, were going to try to score goals. Thats the kind of team we are." Maximiliano Urruti, Gaston Fernandez and Will Johnson scored for Portland (3-4-7), which had its 22-game unbeaten run at home end. Urruti scored an impressive opener after just three minutes and Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted saved a second goal in the first 10 minutes with a sprawling dive on a goal-bound Johnson shot moments later. In the 15th minute the games momentum shifted as Hurtado drew a penalty against Portland defender Jack Jewsbury following a darting run into the box. Morales converted in the 16th minute, drawing the game even against the run of play. Vancouver was awarded a second penalty nine minutes later when Jorge Villafana tackled Sebastian Fernandez inside the box. Kekuta Mannehs run sparked the play but the crowd didnt appreciate the call for a second consecutive spot kick. Morales converted again, increasing his team-leading goal total to five. The Whitecaps were lucky not to concede a penalty of their own when Diego Valeri was tackled from behind in the box but referee Kevin Stott withheld his whistle and play continued despite the protests of Portland coach Caleb Porter. Hurtado concluded his strong first half by scoring a rebounded goal after a sharp cross from Morales deep in injury time. Donovan Ricketts saved Hurtados initial shot but the ricochet deflected off of the Portland natives knee and bounced over the line for a 3-1 advantage. Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson praised the play of Hurtado, who grew up in the Portland suburbs and played for the Timbers under-23 team before being drafted by the Whitecaps in 2013. "Hes been superb," said Robinson. "When you (play in front of family and friends) as a young player, you try to go away from the things that youre good at. He didnt do that. I thought his movement was excellent and he got his reward with the goal." Robinson replaced Manneh with Russell Teibert to open the second half as Vancouver downshifted to more comfortably manage the expected Portland attack. Yet it was the Whitecaps who struck first after the break with Morales crossing to left back Harvey, who fired into the bottom right corner for a 4-1 advantage in the 49th minute. Portland changed its offensive plan by inserting forwards Fanendo Adi and Fernandez for the ineffective Steve Zakuani and Urruti, respectively, but the visitors held their ground for much of the second half. Finally, Fernandez headed in a Valeri cross to cut the deficit to two goals in the 77th minute. Ousted then dove to save an Adi shot in the 84th minute but was helpless when Adi juggled the ball and flicked it to Johnson, who hammered home Portlands third in the 86th. The Whitecaps withstood a barrage of late pressure thanks to key saves from Ousted and strong performances from defenders Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien. After the game, Robinson was still focused on his teams effective attack. "If youd said to me before the game, would I take a 4-3, I wouldve," he said. "I know were a team that can score goals. I said all along Id rather win 4-3 than 1-0." Vancouver next travels to Philadelphia to play the Union on Saturday. Ward appeared in court Friday on misdemeanour charges that he threw a glass mug at a bartender at a Denver strip club.On the eve of the biggest fight of his career, Anthony (Rumble) Johnsons only concern is the chill in the air in Stockholm. The Florida-based light-heavyweight doesnt much like the cold. But stepping into a cage with six-foot-five Swede Alexander (The Mauler) Gustafsson doesnt faze him one bit.No point in being like all high-strung and stiff like that, said a relaxed Johnson. That gets you nowhere. Thats wasted energy. The two fighters meet Saturday on a televised UFC card at the 30,000-plus Tele2 Arena with a title shot on the line.Gustafsson (16-2) is ranked No. 1 among 205-pound contenders and working his way to a rematch with champion Jon (Bones) Jones, whom he pushed for five gruelling rounds in Toronto before losing a close five-round decision at UFC 165 in September 2013.Johnson (18-4) is ranked third among light-heavyweights, a well-rounded and hard-hitting fighter now campaigning in his third weight class. The UFC is billing the card as just its second major stadium event and the first in Europe. UFC 129 drew 55,000-plus to Torontos Rogers Centre in April 2011 to see then-welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defeat Jake Shields. The Tele2 Arena, which features a retractable roof, is normally home to the Hammarby IF and Djurgardens soccer teams. Its just huge, said Johnson.its going to be massive, added Gustafsson. Its going to be packed. The six-foot-two Johnson has won eight straight, knocking out Antonio Rogerio Nogueira last time out. Gustafsson defeated Jimi Manuwa in March for his seventh victory in his last eight fights. There has been plenty of respect between the two fighters in advance.I think hes awesome, Johnson said of the big Swede. He seems like a good guyy.dddddddddddd Great fighter, obviously. A lot of experience ... Im just honoured to be able to fight him.First of all hes a very humble person, Gustafsson said of Johnson. And a great fighter. A lot of power. Heavy hands. So its really going to be a test for me Saturday but Ive done my homework and Im ready. Im going to solve the problem.Johnson, who walks around these days at 230 to 235 pounds, had trouble making weight in the past. He would cut from 210 pounds to 170 to make welterweight.Still he has no regrets about those past struggles.Trying to make 170 was tough, he said, not surprisingly. But if I hadnt fought at 170 people might not know who I am right now if I hadnt made that sacrifice and did the things I did at 170.It was crazy, he said of the weight cut. I dont recommend that for anybody.Johnson, 30, had been punishing his body for a while. A former junior college wrestling champion, he competed at 174 and 184 pounds while at Lassen Community College in California. Thanks to a knee issue, the 28-year-old Gustafsson has spent just four minutes 18 seconds in the cage since meeting Jones in Toronto. Hes had a lot of time to think about his fight with the champion, a bout he still thinks he won — as does Johnson. In Saturdays co-main event, 44-year-old Dan Henderson (30-12) returns to middleweight to face No. 8 Gegard Mousasi (35-5-2).Also on the card, No. 5 light-heavyweight contender Phil (Mr. Wonderful) Davis (13-2 with one no contest) takes on No. 7 Ryan (Darth) Bader (19-4).Saturdays card features fighters from 13 countries. Its growing fast, Gustafsson said of MMA. Its one of the biggest sports right now in Sweden.Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter Cheap Barcelona Jerseys Cheap Real Madrid Jerseys Authentic Cheap Bayern Munich Jerseys Cheap Dortmund Jerseys Cheap USA Jerseys Cheap USWNT Jerseys France Soccer Jerseys Soccer Mexico Jerseys Cheap Germany Jerseys Cheap Belgium Soccer Jerseys Brazil Jerseys From China Germany Jerseys From China Authentic Soccer Mexico Jerseys Cheap Portugal Soccer Jerseys Wholesale Spain Jerseys Cheap France Football Jerseys Cheap Germany Jerseys Authentic Cheap Mexico Jerseys Authentic Wholesale Colombia Jerseys Cheap Belgium Football Jerseys Wholesale Argentina Jerseys Cheap USA Soccer Jerseys China cheap uswnt jersey authentic Authentic AC Milan Jerseys Discount Arsenal Jerseys Wholesale A.S.
